What can be done to force or encourage airlines to replace their more noisy jets?
Older model aircraft and hush-kitted aircraft (e.g., DC-9, Boeing 727, etc.) produce a greater noise impact on the airport’s neighbors than quieter, newly-manufactured Stage 3 aircraft. The Airport Noise and Capacity Act of 1990 mandated that all commercial service aircraft over 75,000 pounds comply with Stage 3 noise level criteria by January 1, 2000. Therefore, commercial service hush-kitted aircraft that operate at MSP are Stage 3 compliant and meet the required federal noise criteria. The MAC does not have the authority to restrict the types of aircraft that are used at MSP; however, as airlines that operate at MSP continue to update their aircraft fleets, quieter aircraft technology will continue to become more prevalent at MSP.
