The most efficient way airports can operate is to land and depart aircraft using certain runways for an extended period of time. While the winds are blowing from a constant direction aircraft approaching the airport will fly into the wind and line up several miles apart, getting ready to land. The repetition of aircraft you hear from the ground is the lined-up aircraft on their approach to the airport.
