On October 27, 2005, a new north/south runway, Runway 17/35, opened at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Part of a $3.1 billion airport expansion program begun in 1998, Runway 17/35 will provide approximately 25% more operational capacity, allowing the airport to accommodate future increases in operations.
The runway is oriented in a north-south fashion east of, and approximately parallel with, Cedar Avenue (Hwy 77) and north of Interstate 494. (See diagram below.)
The addition of the runway, however, means communities historically experiencing little aircraft noise, will now have aircraft flying overhead. Specifically, aircraft will be flying over areas south of the airport including portions of Bloomington, Burnsville, Apple Valley and Eagan. Residents living on the east side of Richfield may also experience sideline noise as aircraft queue onto the taxiways and then takeoff to the south.
