Runway 12R/30L - South Parallel Runway Center Segment Reconstruction Project

The center segment (3,100 feet) of Runway 12R/30L ("south parallel runway") at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) is in need of reconstruction. This portion of the runway currently requires continuous monitoring and frequent repairs due to usage and age. The runway was initially constructed in 1950 and extended to its current length (10,000 ft.) in 1961. In 1998 and 1999 the east and west one-third of the runway was reconstructed.

Reconstruction of both parallel runways (north and south) has been included in the Metropolitan Airports Commission’s (MAC) Capital Improvement Plan since the early 1990s. Reconstruction of the north parallel runway (12L/30R) is tentatively scheduled for the summer of 2008.

In order to reconstruct this portion of the runway it must be shut down, making it unusable for about two months. The runway closure is scheduled to begin August 13th and weather permitting it should reopen by mid-October.
